Brother Of US Rep. Dan Kildee Shot And Killed, Allegedly By His Son

The brother of a U.S. Representative for Michigan was shot and killed early Tuesday, allegedly by his son, who was involved in an earlier domestic incident, authorities said.
Police were first called about a domestic incident in Burton at around 2:50 a.m. Tuesday, Genesee County Sheriff Christopher R. Swanson said during a press conference. The incident involved a verbal confrontation, and there was a gun presented, Swanson said.
The 27-year-old suspect fled on foot, and made contact with his mother, who attempted to give him a ride to the Vienna Township home of his father, 57-year-old Tim Kildee, the brother of Rep. Dan Kildee (D-Mich.). The suspect jumped out of the moving vehicle, however, so his mother and father met up to search for him.
Tim Kildee’s other son, who was staying in the basement of his home, reported that after Tim Kildee returned with the suspect, there was a yelling match including a comment about ‘give me your wallet and your keys’, Swanson said.
That wallet was found on that suspect’s person later, Swanson said.
The son in the basement told authorities he heard one shot, and that shot took the life of Timothy Kildee, Swanson said.
The suspect then allegedly took his father’s vehicle from the driveway, but he got into a high-impact crash with a pickup truck in Genesee township soon after. Swanson said investigators believe the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when the crash occurred, but the two individuals in the other vehicle were doing well.
The suspect was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, Swanson said. Although hospitalized, the suspect was in custody but not charged yet, Swanson said.
“There was some type of breakdown and/or other entanglements that caused him to be so violent,” Swanson said of the suspect’s initial domestic dispute at another family member’s house. “Were going to continue bringing not only answers to questions but comfort to the family.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said the investigation was still ongoing, but several potential charges could be brought against the suspect, including murder and carjacking.
Rep. Kildee was in Washington at the time of the incident, and was traveling back to Michigan Tuesday.
Our family is grieving and heartbroken. There are no words to describe the loss of a beloved brother and family member, especially in such a terrible tragedy, Rep. Kildee said in a statement. “I thank the community for honoring my familys privacy during this very difficult time.”
